Our Favourites! Hedge planting scheme for 100 - 120m hedge

Ok we admit it we didn't do a small hedge for our favourite hedgerow - simply because we couldn't get enough plants in it! We would love to do schemes for 100m or more but after much discussion came up with this hedgerow! If you want any ideas or advice for a hedgerow please just call us on 01420 768 242 for some friendly advice - our FREE Guide the Hedges is a good place to start - simply download it from our home page.

Unlike some suppliers we don’t sell any native hedge bare root plants under 60cm tall – the survival rate is much lower and will take a year or so longer to grow into a full hedge – these plants will average about 75cm tall.

This hedgerow is made up from 600 plants - 250 Hawthorn, 50 each of Field Maple, Rosa Rugosa, Dogwood, Blackthorn, Rowan and Lime, plus 25 Wild Cherry and Guelder Rose.

Blackthorn is the harbinger of spring with blossom often appearing as early as February and continues flowering until Hawthorn takes over in April, giving you a flowering period of four to five months. In the Autumn it has beautiful black berries or ‘sloes’ which are loved by many wildlife species. As the name suggests it is extremely thorny and is often used as a security barrier but it is a beautiful hedge plant and worth putting in to any hedgerow scheme for the early flowers.

Hawthorn is the most popular native hedge and the basis for most mixed hedgerows seen in the countryside.  It has fragrant white flowers call May blossom from April, followed by large red berries, or 'haws' in the Autumn. As Autumn moves towards winter the leave turn a golden brown before falling in November with the first frosts.

Rosa Rugosa is a good choice to mix in with other hedging plants as most other plants flower in the spring whereas Rosa Rugosa flowers right through the summer in autumn when the flowers are replaced by large bright red rose hips which are a favourite with the birds. The foliage also gives an attractive display of autumn colour.

Wild Cherry, or Prunus Avium, are fast growing and are very important to wildlife as they produce a crop of wild cherries which are a bit sour for our taste but the birds love them. They also produce masses of white flowers early in the spring, and in the autumn the leaves turn red and yellow so they are a very good choice for inclusion in a mixed hedge.

Rowan or Mountain Ash are fast growing and make a superb addition to a native hedge. They have large cream coloured flower heads in the spring which are followed by giant clusters of bright red berries in late summer and autumn. The leaves turn an attractive golden colour in the autumn.

The Guelder Rose is a fantastic option to build into a native hedgerow - they have beautiful white flowers in the Summer and then have red berries in the Autumn which birds love.

Lime plants are fast growing and have an attractive heart shape leaf and the beautiful perfume emitted by the small green flowers is just wonderful. The scent carries for miles and this alone makes them a good choice - probably my favourite to mix in a hedge.

Dogwood is another great choice for a mixed hedgerow because in addition to the cream flowers in the Spring and early Summer the stems turn into a range of red and yellow colours in the Winter bringing a lovely variety to your hedgerow throughout the year. In the Autumn the hedge will produce a dark purple berry often called a Dogberry.  These are preferred by many wildlife species to orchard fruits so Dogwood is often grown around organic fruit fields to protect crops.

Field Maple or Acer Campestre will make a lovely deciduous hedge on its own and  is a delightful plant as the new growth is tinged with pink in the spring and summer but in the autumn it turns a brilliant yellow before losing it's leaves. It is fast growing and totally hardy in even the most severe winters.
